10 Absurdly Excellent Cover Songs

I started off this blog post with the intent of sharing great covers of popular songs from already-established artists. My “research” quickly dissolved into a two-hour Live Lounge binge, so naturally it serves as the source material for most of the covers listed here. God bless the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge for being a thing; it’s certainly made the world a better place.

Without further ado, I present to you 10 cover songs I deem absurdly excellent.

1. The 1975 – What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction Cover)

I could listen to this version of “What Makes You Beautiful” on repeat for a solid 18 hours, probably more. In fact, I’m going to re-listen to it right now (5% of those 2 million views are probably all from me). I feel as though Matt Healy is seducing me with his voice just a bit, but I’m sorry Matt, it would never work between us.

2. Bastille – We Can’t Stop (Miley Cyrus Cover)

Bastille can make songs that I dislike not just moderately tolerable, but extremely enjoyable. I mean… There’s a string section… How could you not love this?!

3. Miley Cyrus – Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Ray Cover)

I may have just declared my dislike for a song of hers, but it must be noted that the girl can SANG regardless of her new and rather odd persona.

4. John Mayer – XO (Beyonce Cover)

Well done, John. I appreciate your voice.

5. Sam Smith – Fast Car (Tracy Chapman Cover)

When we say our prayers before bed tonight, let’s all give thanks to God for granting Sam Smith with the voice of an angel. Amen.

6. Ed Sheeran – Stay with Me (Sam Smith Cover)

Now that we’ve heard from Sam, let’s hear Edward’s beautiful voice cover Sam. Sweet goodness of my heart… ED, YOU KILL ME. Also, I’m seeing him for the fifth time Saturday night. Is that overkill? No? Okay, good.

7. Passenger – Dark Horse (Katy Perry Cover)

So here’s a thing that’s both real life and lovely: an acoustic cover of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” by Passenger. Love this dewd.

8. The Kooks – Pumped Up Kicks (Foster the People Cover)

I like The Kooks. I like “Pumped Up Kicks.” Therefore, I like this. You should too.

Fun fact: This past Tuesday, The Kooks came out with their fourth studio album, Listen,
which you should (wait for it…) LISTEN to!

9. FUN. (ft. Hayley Williams) – Somebody I Used to Know (Gotye Cover)

So with this video, we have two options:

  1. Hayley is a ghost.
  2. She recorded her part previous to FUN.’s taping.

Regardless, it’s a great cover. Speaking of FUN., I’d like a new album release soon, plz & thx. But in the meantime I’ll content myself with listening to Bleachers.

10. Ed Sheeran – Skinny Love (Bon Iver Cover)

Holy yes thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, ED. We started strong with that cover from The 1975 and we shall end strong with another magnificent cover from Ed. Indeed, ‘tis one of my favorite covers of all.

Sidenote: I could create an entire blog post dedicated to fantastic covers by Ed… hey wait, that’s actually a decent idea. I CALL DIBS. (No, but seriously.)
